This distance learning lesson uses four oral history videos of persons that lived through incarceration camps to teach the story of discrimination toward Japanese Americans during WWII. The content is correlated to Common Core Standards and California Content Area Connections. A set of discussion questions accompanies each of the videos in the first portion of the lesson. During the second activity, students dig deeper into the symbolism and feelings evoked from watching the videos. The California Museum also provides a playlist of videos to accompany these activities, learn more about them here. The videos are hosted on YouTube. If your district blocks YouTube, then they may not be viewable.

In the Classroom

Use the videos and lesson activities included on this site as part of any unit on discrimination, WWII, and American History. Engage students in learning as you start your unit using Google Jamboard, reviewed here. Ask students to add sticky notes or text to a prompt that asks them what they understand about discrimination or events during WWII. Instead of providing a worksheet for students to respond to the questions included in this activity, use edpuzzle, reviewed here, to add questions and discussion activities within each video. Extend learning further by asking students to create blog posts using Edublogs, reviewed here, to discuss discrimination against the Japanese during WWII and reflect upon how that impacts Japanese Americans in current times.

Magic ToDo uses artificial intelligence (AI) to break down tasks into a list of step-by-step directions to complete the job. Enter your prompt or activity into the chat box to begin, then use the pepper icons to select the specificity of directions. One pepper provides an essential list; five peppers offer the most detailed steps. Press enter after adding your prompt and choosing the level of directions to provide to view your results. Open the list by clicking the blue wand next to your prompt; hovering over the blue wand will show "break down the item." After viewing the list, use drag and drop features to change the order of steps in the list if desired, or choose the blue wand next to any item on the list to create additional steps. Other options in a dropbox next to each step of the directions include determining the approximate time to complete that step, editing the information, or deleting the step. Click the checkbox in each step as it is completed for a visual look at the progress in completing the task.

In the Classroom

Use Magic ToDo as a professional tool for creating to-do lists to complete upcoming tasks, such as preparation for parent-teacher conferences, writing long-term lesson plans, preparing for substitutes, and more. Share Magic To-Do with students to create a guide for planning on completing long-term projects. Show students how to use the estimated time feature to help them understand the time required to complete all project steps. To help students stay on track, ask them to create a to-do list for their upcoming project, take a screenshot of their list, and share it with you. Then, ask for weekly screenshots that show each student's progress in completing the project and ask them to use the checkboxes to mark completed items. If students fall behind, have short conferences to determine what is holding them back and provide support as needed. This tool is also helpful for students with special needs or attention disorders to use as a guide for completing required tasks.

This four-minute video teaches students how Cesar Chavez established the United Farm Workers union to advocate for farm workers. In addition, this resource includes a lesson plan that integrates the video into a broader topic that features learning about Chavez by examining a primary source document that displays an image of Chavez organizing workers outside of a supermarket in 1969 (click view the lesson plan then click procedure and click the image). Share the link with students through your Google Classroom or on your class website with the provided link. Additional options offer registered users the ability to build a custom lesson that includes the video and other resources added by the teacher.

In the Classroom

Create a free PBS Learning Media account to add this video and resources to a learning activity. Then, easily add questions related to the video on a slide presentation that includes the video and other resources from PBS or your device. Assign Learning Media lessons to a class you create, to Google Classroom, or get a quick assign code to share with students to access the lessons without signing in. Creating and assigning a task with several learning activities works well with flipped and blended learning activities. Extend learning by asking students to research and learn about other Hispanic leaders. Ask them to share their knowledge by creating interactive images using Genially, reviewed here, explainer videos using moovly, reviewed here, or podcast episodes hosted on Buzzsprout, reviewed here.

Host virtual meetings with up to thirty participants with Kumospace. The free plan includes all of the site's core features, including unlimited floors and virtual apps. Other features include the ability to screen share, chat with individuals or the entire group, and customize your workspace. After creating an account, start your meeting by selecting the "Create a Space" button. Next, give your space a name, customize the end of the URL to be shared, and choose an option for your area. Then, share the link to invite others to your virtual meeting. Finally, choose from templates to change the background of your space, add floors, and edit privacy settings for your session and each floor. Privacy options include requiring a password for different floors or setting the floor availability only for use by co-hosts. Designing effective and productive chatbot prompts requires understanding how generative AI tools work. This site provides many time-saving prompts for educators' and students' needs. The prompt library is broken into several categories: assessment, lesson planning, and communication, and the prompts work with GenAI chatbots, including ChatGPT, reviewed here, Claude, reviewed here Perplexity reviewed here, and others. Each suggested prompt also includes examples and suggestions for modifying the prompt to fit individual needs.

In the Classroom

Bookmark and save this terrific prompt library for any number of uses when using generative AI chat tools. Find ideas and activities for lessons, quickly create and edit assessments, and develop rubrics. Consider using a curation tool such as Wakelet, reviewed here to bookmark this site and others that provide AI resources and to collaborate with peers on how to use AI resources. Be sure to visit the student prompts on this site that share resources for creating flashcards, translating text for multilingual learners, and other helpful study resources. Consider sharing some student prompts, such as the flashcard or "explain it to me like..." with parents for at-home practice and to reinforce classroom content.

Have you ever told anyone, "Let me Google that for you?" That is what LMGTFY is all about! This site allows you to demonstrate how to Google (and much more) terms, then send a link with a step by step demonstration on how to complete the search. LMGTFY has grown beyond Google and now offers users the ability to select from several popular search engines including Bing, Yahoo, Ask, and DuckDuckGo. The drop-down box provides choices to search the web, images, video, and more. After making selections and entering a search term, click to get the link or choose preview to view the information.

In the Classroom

Use LMGTFY to teach students how to use search engines effectively. Create links demonstrating searches using different terms and different search engines and have students analyze the results. When students create multimedia presentations of research projects, ask them to include a screen share using Free Screen Recorder Online, reviewed here, to show their search method using LMGTFY. This site is perfect to use with young students to demonstrate proper search techniques.

Include lessons from the IWitness site with your lessons related to the Holocaust and when teaching about prejudice and empathy. Increase comprehension of the complex ideas related to the Holocaust and prejudice using mind maps to organize and clarify information for students using a digital mind mapping tool such as MindMup,reviewed here. Students Rebuild uses philanthropy to bring students and teachers together using art to build global awareness of issues around the world. Each year Students Rebuild shares a challenge based upon a critical problem around the world. Sign up to participate to receive details of annual challenges and projects. Past challenges include sharing recipes to fight hunger, creating non-perishable flower garlands in support of children affected by earthquakes in Nepal, and making beads to bring safe drinking water to communities in need. Matching funds for donations are bestowed by the Bezos Foundation and given to supporting partners. Learn more and view free teaching resources for use in K-12 classrooms by visiting the Resources section of Students Rebuild.

In the Classroom

Participate in annual challenges to engage students and inspire them to learn more about global issues. Use the provided resources as a starting point for your art projects. Encourage students to learn more about the challenge issue by creating infographics using Canva Infographic Maker, reviewed here. Create infographics together with younger students or ask older students to create their own to share with peers. Enhance learning by using Gravity, reviewed here to locate grid pals from the challenge country. Use Gravity to ask questions of students in both countries that encourage the sharing of ideas and understanding of each culture. Extend learning by asking students to use Sway, reviewed here, to share their knowledge and suggestions for solving global issues through writing, video, and other multimedia projects.

This simple site provides a valuable service for anyone with a need to share a daily schedule for a child. Just use the link to add new items to the planner including the time and specific details. When finished, print the completed schedule to share with caregivers.

In the Classroom

Use this planner to create a personalized schedule for any student. This is especially helpful for students with strict requirements due to diet or health care. Students who receive different services throughout the day will appreciate having this schedule included in their notebook or taped onto their desk for easy viewing. For more visual students, create an infographic using Visme, reviewed here, to provide a daily or weekly schedule.

Make a free, easy, "ottomatic" bibliography with Ottobib.com. Type in the ISBN number of any book (without the dashes), choose the style, MLA, APA, Chicago, or Bibtex, and create your perfect book citation. You can also enter multiple books by inserting a comma between the ISBN numbers. Select from linking to the bibliography, having a printed page, or finding at your library through a link to Worldcat, an online library catalog.

In the Classroom

Use Ottobib.com as a lesson on citing sources and bibliography on your interactive whiteboard. Include Ottobib.com as a saved favorite on all student computers as well as a link on your webpage. Use as a springboard to discuss styles of documentation including MLA, APA, Chicago, and Bibtex.
