Looking for a fun and engaging way to teach a lesson? Digital Escapes made using Genially will fit the bill. Digital Escapes are online versions of immersive games where teams discover clues, solve puzzles, and accomplish tasks to escape from the game site. They're an exciting, fun, and effective learner-centered teaching strategy you will reach for again and again. Learn how to implement this instructional strategy in your classroom and about the many benefits of this approach, such as developing problem-solving skills, fostering a growth mindset, encouraging collaboration and teamwork, and promoting access to content knowledge. As a result of this session, teachers will: 1. Understand Digital Escapes as a learner-centered instructional strategy; 2. Extend student learning using Canva Infographic Creator, reviewed here, and ask students to create infographics and timelines to share facts about this period of growth of the United States. Extend learning by asking students to create multimedia projects such as digital books created using Book Creator, reviewed here. Pandora is a customizable popular music streaming service based on the Music Genome Project. Enter the name of a musician or group to find a "channel" made up of singe by that artist/group and other songs that have similar characteristics: lyrics, rhythm, style, etc. The "genome" sorts and matches the musical characteristics of the artist or of a particular song. Register for free (requires email). Then as you listen, click "like" to teach Pandora your preferences. Read more about the Music Genome Project under "About" in the footer of the page. There is a paid version of Pandora, but the few commercials in the free version are tolerable. Pandora also has free apps versions to use on mobile devices, and your account is accessible from all devices.

In the Classroom
In music classes, use Pandora to open discussion about elements and styles of music. Play a channel long enough for students to hear a few selections, then ask them to figure out what the different songs have in common, perhaps besides an artist. Why does the work of another artist show in the same "channel"? While studying lyrics as poetry in an English/Language Arts class, compare lyrics of songs from the same channel. How are they similar? What other song lyrics might you add to this channel?Use a Pandora channel as background during a discussion of certain decades of the 20th century or have students find/create channels that represent an era such as the Civil War period. Have them explain their "mix" and why it is representative. Play a Pandora channel as a writing prompt or during art activities to promote creative expression. During a unit on how to study, be sure to offer Pandora as a customizable way for students to create an auditory "study environment." World language teachers can find artists whose lyrics use the language they are teaching to build listening skills. Elementary teachers and ESL/ELL teachers can use channels with children's songs for vocabulary or other class activities.

Qwant is a search engine that allows you to search several forms of media at once, share easily, or create bookmarks and lists. Type in any search term to display results in columns sorted by web, news, graphs, social, and shopping. Or click to view in classic view. Click the Boards tab to browse collections by others (similar to Pinterest). Account creation isn't necessary, but it allows the option to save, tag, and organize sites into public or private lists.

Imagine automatically creating a video from a written description. That's a fantastic prospect, and it is now possible using the magic of Invideo AI. invideo AI turns your ideas into videos in just a few short minutes. After creating an account, select the link to make a video. In the chat space, describe in detail and provide instructions for completing the video using up to 3600 characters. After adding the description, choose the button to generate the video and wait for the magic to happen. Creating videos will take a few minutes. Once your video is generated, use the available tools to regenerate if changes are desired, or choose to export the video when ready. Download the video to your device in mp4 format and select from the available options for video quality. Share videos with students from your device, using the provided link, or export videos to YouTube, reviewed here. Free accounts offer ten minutes per week of video generation, 10 GB of storage, and four exports weekly with the invideo logo. If you need a resource for countdown timers, Promethean flipcharts, or phonics videos you may find what you need at this "extras" site from Crickweb. These are resources that don't fit neatly into their useful grade level categories, so are in this "other" spot on the site. Included are several Promethean flipcharts in zip format for easy download. Topics include function machines, weigh ins, and a number Venn diagram. Timers are for use on any PC or whiteboard and include countdown clocks in several formats such as a clock, timer, or "bomb." Some items require flash which is not available in all browsers.

In the Classroom
Use this list as you study any topic that features leaders: the founding fathers, famous scientists, and much more. Encourage students to read about leaders in diverse fields - including the one you are studying - to compare and discuss what makes someone a successful leader and why people rise to the top among their peers across time, place, and circumstance. This website, produced by the Martha's Vineyard Museum, tells the story of Laura Jernegan and the journal she kept on her voyage on a whaling ship. In October 1868, Laura Jernegan, a 6 year old girl from Edgartown, Massachusetts set out on a three year whaling voyage. Laura, her father, mother, brother and the ship's crew set off to the whaling grounds of the Pacific Ocean. The site also tells the adventurous history of whaling. Choose from many different topics for exploration such as information about whales, a timeline of whaling, interactive map, and explore the ship. Dive deeper to view artifacts, meet the crew, and view a picture gallery. Lesson plans (and complete units) are provided for grades 1-3, 4-5, and even high school.
In the Classroom
Include this site as you study 19th century America, New England, or maritime history. Use the teacher link at the bottom of the page to find units and lessons. Introduce the site to students and allow them to explore on their own. Challenge students to create a talking avatar using a photo or other image (legally permitted to be reproduced). The avatars can be used to explain a day in the life of one of the Jernegan family members. Use a site such as Blabberize, reviewed here. HIgh school classes could compare the whaling industry with other practices that have had an impact on our natural resources. How does this approach to whaling differ from the Native Alaskans? How does it differ from today's use of ocean resources?
