TeachersFirst Reading Treks create a virtual field trip of resources about a piece of literature or text using the My Maps feature of Google Maps. This Reading Trek provides inspiration and suggestions for using the trade book, A Long Way from Chicago. During the time of the Great Depression and the beginning of WWII, Joey and Mary Alice, city children from Chicago, spend a week each August with their eccentric Grandma Dowdel in her rural home town. Over the eight years the story takes place, they learn to appreciate their Grandma's spunkiness and get to experience many situations that their parents would never allow them to encounter. Use our robust Instructional Guide with students in grades 4-8. Content correlates to Common Core Standards, ISTE Student Standards, National Core Art Standards, and National Curriculum Standards for Social Studies. In the Classroom
Discover the many suggested classroom uses for this resource found on the Instructional Guide (PDF). Consider using the historical information and primary sources from the book to have students create timelines of the important events throughout the book, beginning with American prosperity, the Great Depression, and into World War II. Find a variety of free online timeline creation tools here. Using the map and locales, trace and then calculate distances for Joey and Mary Alice's journeys back and forth to Grandma Dowdel's home. Use Google My Maps, reviewed here, to create and share custom maps that include information about events and important information about the time.

Finding Creative Commons images representing all members of society is difficult; the Human Development Institute shares a gallery of free, downloadable photos that include people with disabilities in all aspects of culture. All images are hosted on Flickr, reviewed here. Open any of the included albums to view photographs taken in different settings, such as outdoors, in music class, and in a university setting. The images include subjects of different ages, disabilities, and races. Open any photo and follow the links to download to your device or share to social media links. Although attribution isn't required, whenever possible, include attribution when using images that are not your own.
In the Classroom
Bookmark and save this collection of images to use in many different circumstances. For example, use these images when building slide presentations, writing classroom newsletters, or accompanying math story problems. Save your favorite images from this gallery into a personal Flickr album to easily find them, and include images shared by other sites such as Fresh Folk, reviewed here, EDUimages, reviewed here, and Nappy, reviewed here. This site is provided by an alliance of thirty-seven non-profit, non-partisan organizations to offer free online civics resources to classrooms. Curated collections include voting and elections, media literacy, subjects to learn at home, teaching the 19th Amendment, controversial topics, and a Constitution Day toolkit. In addition to selecting topics, you can view the information by choosing from narrower topics, including citizenship, history, branches of government, and more. Use the dropdown box for Collections at the top of the page to find resources correlated to Common Core, NCSS, and National Standards for Civics and Government. Links to resources include videos, free online courses, classroom presentations, and many other tools for classroom civics lessons. Note: the vast majority of items included are free; however, a few link to resources require payment.

In Pieces is an interactive exhibition of 30 of the world's most interesting but unfortunately endangered species, portrayed through fragmented geometric art. Each species has a dedicated page with an animation and a brief, informative description highlighting its danger and the need for conservation. This artistic website aims to raise awareness about endangered species and illustrate how people can help with conservation. Each animal has statistics, a video, and a link to ways to help. The videos are housed in YouTube. If your district blocks YouTube, the videos may not be viewable. Be sure to view the linked resources to ensure they are appropriate for your students.
In the Classroom
This resource would be great in art, math, or science. Download the images and have students use a drawing program to cut out shapes or use pattern blocks to replicate the downloaded image. Use this site in math class to enhance your statistics unit. The information is shown in various ways and provides students with a real-world connection on how statistics can be used to communicate information. Have students research a different endangered animal not shown and create a statistic presentation. In science, use this site to engage students in a unit on conservation. Have students view the site and record facts or statistics they found interesting. They could utilize a KWL to chart and record their thoughts. ClassPoint integrates with PowerPoint and Windows operating systems using presentation tools, interactive quiz questions, and a gamified reward system. Use the presentation tools to highlight information, add annotations, open a whiteboard, and more. Turn your slides into interactive questions to share with students and receive immediate feedback through the responses. Use the rewards option to give or take away stars to students based on your preferences; students move through levels to receive badges by earning rewards. Download ClassPoint to your Windows device by following the directions and prompts provided. Free accounts offer up to a twenty-five-student class size, five questions per PowerPoint, three draggable objects, three saved classes, and basic gamification. ClassPoint is not available for MacOS devices at the time of this review; however, it is being looked at as an option, so Mac users might want to check back to see if it becomes available.
In the Classroom
Use ClassPoint's tutorials after downloading this tool onto your compatible Windows device to learn how to add quizzes, create word clouds, upload videos, and use the other features available with ClassPoint. Take lessons beyond your typical slide show presentations using ClassPoint's interactive component to engage students and connect learning through multimedia presentations. Insert polls within your slides to gauge students' understanding of the content or ask them to respond to questions throughout the presentation. Create and customize artificial intelligence (AI) chatbots in a secure, COPPA-compliant setting with Mizou. Customize chatbots using your materials, instructions, and rubrics and share them securely with students. Personalize the appearance as desired and include text, audio, and images. Receive instant feedback that identifies areas of students' strengths and weaknesses of the content. Mizou also offers a searchable library of content available to add to your workspace to use as is or to edit to fit your needs. Share chatbots with students by launching a new session and providing students with the URL or QR code. Students share their names to access the chat; directions and responses are available as text or audio.
In the Classroom
Use Mizou in many different ways to engage students in learning. For example, when teaching the novel 1984, use the chat in Mizou's library with George Orwell to engage in critical thinking activities that explore the themes and ties to the modern world shared in the novel. Each icon includes licensing information so you can look for icons that are Creative Commons or public domain. Create an account then make user sets of your favorite icons. Access your user sets from anywhere through the FindIcons website. Explore the TAGS button to find search ideas. Be aware: ANY word/term can be searched, some may not be appropriate for the classroom. If you plan to allow young people to use this site independently, be sure to discuss appropriate searching.

The PBS LearningMedia website has an interactive timeline called "Causes of the American Revolution" that helps students learn about the events leading up to America's fight for independence from Britain. It covers important happenings and laws from the 1760s to the start of the Revolutionary War, showing them in order with explanations, pictures, and original documents. The site offers an accessible version for those who may need it and allows you to share it on Google Classroom or share a direct link with students.
In the Classroom
Students examine the timeline to identify where key events took place. Using Google My Maps, reviewed here or another mapping tool, have students create an interactive map that plots the locations of significant events leading up to the American Revolution, adding descriptions and images for each location. Have students use the timeline to gather evidence on the causes of the American Revolution and organize a class debate on whether the American Revolution was justified. Divide the class into two groups, one arguing in favor and the other against, using information from the timeline to support their arguments. Teachers and award-winning publishers have developed thousands of thought-provoking questions spanning various topics and subjects. These questions are accompanied by relevant videos and reading materials that assist students in responding thoroughly and meaningfully. Educators can take advantage of the extensive question bank by selecting existing questions to give to students or by creating their own original questions. The vast collection of assignable materials helps facilitate in-depth learning and discussion. Videos are linked to YouTube and Vimeo; check for access before using them in class or assigning them to students.

Save time when creating presentations and choosing fonts by using Wordmark.it to preview what your exact words will look like. Simply type/paste in any words, and Wordmark.it scans the fonts on your computers, displaying the words in each and every font style you have. Adjust font size as desired to see changes or change to positive or negative space. This site helps find the perfect font for any use in no time at all! You no longer have to guess whether the capitals will look funny or the specific letters/words might be hard to read. Art teachers can use this to demonstrate design aspects of different fonts. Sign up using email and a password to save words if desired, but this isn't necessary for general use.

America's Second Independence Day - Juneteenth is part of the TeachersFirst Help! I Lost My Library/Media Specialist series reviewed here that shares book ideas and resources for teaching about Juneteenth. This resource includes background knowledge information, activities, book suggestions, and ideas for extending learning. Information includes correlation to ISTE and AASL standards.
In the Classroom
Use the suggested activities and book lists to find resources for teaching about Juneteenth in your classroom. Include these lessons as part of Black History Month and when teaching about United States history and civil rights. Engage students in learning about Juneteenth by asking them to create interactive presentations using Genially, reviewed here. Search for Juneteenth on Genially to find a template to use when presenting Juneteenth to students or for students to use to share their knowledge on this topic. Extend learning using Figjam, reviewed here, an online interactive whiteboard, to share additional resources, add polls, diagrams, sketches, and more using Figjam.
