This is an excellent resource when studying British countries and culture. Allow students to explore the site on their own or view together on your interactive whiteboard (or projector). Have students choose a different portion of the site to become their area of expertise. Challenge cooperative learning groups to create videos on the topic. Share the videos on a site such as TeacherTube reviewed here. Challenge your students to create a mini-version of this kind of site on a wiki, creating a guide to their own state or city. Each student could write a portion or page. Scroll through the page to take a 360-degree look at Cape Peninsula and Table Mountain. Learn about the Cape of Good Hope and Portuguese navigator Bartolomeu Dias. On a more serious note, visit Robben Island, home to the imprisoned African leader Nelson Mandela from 1964 - 1982.

Engage students with this interesting site by asking them to explore it independently to introduce your unit on African countries or when learning about Nelson Mandela and his home. Be sure to show students how to use the arrows to view images from the many different angles provided. As students begin your lessons, create a Figjam, reviewed here to share interesting information learned from students' explorations. Use their notes to guide students toward enhancing learning by choosing specific areas to explore further. For example, some students may want to learn more about the geography found in South Africa, while others may want to learn about animals or famous people. Registration isn't required to make up to four free infographics monthly; however, registration allows you to create up to ten monthly infographics and edit the content created by Piktochart. Describe your topic by entering text into the chat bar, then click to generate infographics. After your design appears, choose from several templates to change the style of your infographic. Registered members can change images, text, font, and more. When finished, share your design using the link, embed code, or as an image in PNG format.

Quickly create infographics as a schema activator or lesson introduction by typing in the topic of your lesson. Discuss the information shared on the infographic and ask students to share additional ideas that support their current understanding of the content. Share the infographic creator with students to include with multimedia presentations, book reports, or oral presentations. Convert and download YouTube videos to any device using the Free Video Downloader Online. First, find and copy the video link on the URL of your web browser (this is different than copying the link to share - you want to see the word "watch" in the link you copy). Next, click download to begin saving to your device, then choose from many different options for the type and size of the file to download. Additional download options include saving as an MP3, JPG thumbnail, or caption. For the final step, a preview will appear after selecting an option for download; pick the three dots in the video preview and choose the option to download. Then, view the download videos on your current media player, such as QuickTime.

Beyond Mulan is part of TeachersFirst Help! I Lost My Library/Media Specialist series reviewed here. The article provides an in-depth explanation of Ancient China and early dynasties, a book list with suggested activities for each book, and video suggestions for student learning. In addition, several extension activities are provided to enhance student understanding of Ancient China through compare and contrast activities and research about the Great Wall of China. This article includes correlations to ISTE and AASL standards.
In the Classroom
Take advantage of the resources in this article to introduce Ancient China to students of all ages. For example, when sharing YouTube videos with students, use Timelinely, reviewed here, to create an interactive learning experience by adding comments, highlighting important information, or linking to Google Map locations. Enhance instruction using Nearpod, reviewed here, to create and share interactive lessons available to use as live presentations or as flipped or blended learning activities. Water, Water Everywhere - is one of the TeachersFirst Help! I lost my media/library specialist collection found here. This article features topics and resources that explain how little fresh water there is in the world. The Introduction and Background Knowledge give facts about fresh water and explain the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) for accessible, clean water. The Activities section suggests several books to read that range from ages PreK to grade 12, with seven videos from which to choose. One activity suggests students practice walking with jugs of water balancing on their heads. Another activity is to simulate cleaning up bird feathers after an oil spill. Additional resources and activities are suggested in the Extensions section.
In the Classroom
Include books from this list on your recommended books list to share with students. Engage students further by completing the activity about walking with a water container on their heads. Use Padlet, reviewed here to have students relate how it felt to balance and carry the water and how they could make getting water easier for the community. This is a link to Padlet's Help section for posting video or an image. Ask students to listen to and comment on other classmates' descriptions and ideas. Take a virtual field trip with this Reading Trek based on Susan Hood's book Ada's Violin. This Reading Trek includes a Teacher Guide that uses Google My Maps, reviewed here as the basis for a virtual journey that tells how music transformed the lives of children and teens living on the edge of a landfill just outside Paraguay's capital city. Activities correlate to Common Core Standards, National Standards for Social Studies and Visual Arts, and Social Justice Standards. In addition to teaching ideas for working with the map, this Reading Trek also includes extension activities and links to additional helpful resources.
In the Classroom
Take advantage of the many lesson ideas in the Teachers' Guide to bring this story to life and provide activities that correlate with the book's theme of recycling and reusing materials. As students read the book, create a timeline of events using a simple timeline creation tool such as the one provided by Read, Write, Think, reviewed here to help students follow the sequence of events in the story. After engaging students in learning by creating recycled instruments, have students write and record a short soundtrack to accompany the story. Google Forms is a versatile tool you can use to create surveys and quizzes, collect research data, and plan events easily and quickly. Unlike other "freemium" web-based form tools, Google Forms is completely free and allows for an unlimited number of surveys, questions, and responses. Join this session and learn to use Google Forms to support classroom instruction and improve your productivity. As a result of this session, teachers will: 1. Explore the features of Google Forms; 2. Discover a variety of uses for Google Forms; and 3. Learn to create a basic Google form. This session is appropriate for teachers at all technology levels.
