Persuasive writing is a critical skill that can seem daunting to elementary and middle school students. Now more than ever, readers and writers must be able to distinguish between fact and opinion and clearly identify supporting evidence. Understanding the terms "fact", "opinion", and "evidence" is key to digital literacy, and using them appropriately will help students to construct (and deconstruct) an argument. Join this workshop to look at three tech tools that support authentic persuasive writing. As a result of this session, teachers will: 1. Understand how facts, opinions, and evidence come together form an argument; 2. Explore three online tools for persuasive writing; and 3. Plan to use persuasive writing in instruction. This session is appropriate for teachers at all technology levels.

Goblin Tools provides single-task tools that support making overwhelming tasks more straightforward to complete. Magic ToDo, reviewed here creates step-by-step direction for any project, Formalizer converts text into different tones and styles, and The Judge analyzes the tone of a text. Additional tools include the Estimate that judges the time to complete a task, the Compiler turns a brain dump of ideas into a list of tasks, and The Chef takes a list of your ingredients and dietary constraints and suggests meals to make from what you have. Follow the directions for each tool to add a prompt or list of information, then click the blue button to receive the results.
In the Classroom
Bookmark this site for many classroom uses for both you and your students. Use the Formalizer to demonstrate how to change the text's tone, ask students to try adding a paragraph they wrote, and change the style. After creating the change, have students analyze how the wording changed. Use the Estimator and Magic ToDo as planning tools for longer assignments to help students determine a schedule to complete all work in the provided time. Use The Chef tool and ask students to add a list of nutritious ingredients to complete recipes when learning about healthy diets and nutrition. Choose individual videos or select playlists by topic to find up to date help in using Google tools. If your district blocks YouTube, the videos may not be viewable.
In the Classroom
Bookmark this site on classroom computers for easy reference when working with Google products. Have students create their own support videos using a tool like Powtoon, reviewed here, or Clipchamp, reviewed here, for any technology issues that arise in your classroom. Remember, you can take screenshots (Printscrn button on Windows or Command+Shift+4 on Mac), and include those in a video. You will need to convert the screenshot to a JPG. This can be done easily and quickly using CloudConvert, reviewed here. Figma is a collaborative, online design tool that allows members to create websites, applications, logos, and more. One beneficial resource included in Figma is Figjam, an online collaborative whiteboard. Figjam features include a built-in chat, auto-layout, and features that allow you to create visually appealing and interactive presentations. Create a free account and log in to your account to explore the Figma community to find inspiration that includes files, templates, plugins, and widgets. Use the filters to narrow down searches to include free items to make browsing more productive. Share Figma and Figjam creations with others using a link or embed code. The free plan includes three Figma and three Figjam files; however, educators can upgrade to the professional program for free. Professional plans include what is available under the free plan and unlimited Figjam files for free, team libraries, and audio libraries. FYI - In October of 2024 Google Jamboard will sunset (close down). The good news is Figjam will have a tool to convert Jamboards to Figjam.

World History for Us All is a free curriculum for middle and high schools that offers history as a single story instead of unconnected stories of various civilizations. The teaching units are divided into nine significant eras and include history, geography, and time and a look at the past and future. Each unit addresses the same three essential questions that offer the opportunity to explore history through a focus on the bigger picture. Select the link to any unit to see an overview of the content and download the unit in a PDF or DocX format. All materials correlate to state and national standards.
In the Classroom
Bookmark this site to use in whole as your history curriculum or use parts of lessons to supplement your current instruction. Collaborate with your peers to modify and adjust information in these units to suit your needs. If using Microsoft Word, share your document with peers and add highlights and comments as you adjust the unit. If using the PDF version, use the tools found at SmallPDF, reviewed here, to annotate, merge with your current materials, or convert to another format. As you use this curriculum to view the world from a global perspective, use Google Earth, reviewed here, to create a collaborative project by adding markers to areas around the world to create virtual tours of historic events told through the lens of different locations and perspectives.

The If/Then Collection is a free resource for finding and sharing images and videos of women related to STEM topics. Search the collection by media type, discipline, location, or ambassador name. Another option is to browse through the featured categories found on the home page, including topics such as sports, explorers, and hero videos. Then, share items by selecting the share icon located on each thumbnail image. The required prompt asks you to complete a short form before sharing. The form includes the user's email, the purpose for using the content, and the checkbox agreeing to proper use. Although items on the site are available for free use without crediting the photographer or videographer, proper credit is always encouraged when possible.
In the Classroom
Include this site with your other bookmarks for photo and video resources to use on any occasion. Consider using Symbaloo Edu, reviewed here, or Wakelet, reviewed here, to curate media resources to share with students. Include a link to your Wakelet or Symbaloo collection on your class web page for you and your students to access at any time. The Presidential Library of Harry S. Truman offers an extensive archive of resources to help us understand the idealogical foundations of the Cold War era. The Cold War shaped much of the history of the second half of the twentieth century, particularly in the Western world. Included are a chronology of the era, photographs, oral histories (text based), profiles of important figures, primary documents, and lesson plans. The lesson plans were developed by a group of teachers who attended a summer institute at the Truman Library and can be downloaded as either Word documents or PowerPoint presentations. The documents can be viewed online or downloaded in a printable format.
In the Classroom
While much of what you find here will be useful for your own lesson planning, the photograph archive will be useful for images related to the Cold War era. Some of the documents could be printed and used for small group discussions or analysis. Consider referring students who are doing research for a National History Day project to this resource. Challenge students to research the information shared at this site and create blogs as Cold War personalities. Choices include the design of text-to-speech audio or video from a PowerPoint presentation. After making your selection, take advantage of the available choices to select a language and voice. Then, either upload a file, copy and paste text when creating an audio file, or upload your PowerPoint presentation to create a video. When finished, download the converted file to your device. Free accounts offer you up to twenty projects with maximum uploaded file sizes of up to 10MB. Other restrictions apply to free accounts; this information is available on the pricing page.

Although presentations are uploaded as PowerPoint documents, Narakeet is still easy to use with Google Slides. Upload your Google Slide presentations to the Free Office Online Apps, reviewed here, and save as a PowerPoint presentation. Use Narakeet to share information with world language learners to hear the text spoken in the native language. Use this site with ENL/ELL students to convert small pieces of text to their native language. Use this site with students who have difficulty reading, especially when working with more challenging passages and text. Use the video options to convert student presentations into videos, then share presentations on your class website. Narakeet is also a handy option to use when creating flipped learning lessons. Go digital with Choose Your Own Adventure stories! Google slides presentations don't have to be linear. Learn to create a nonlinear show that can engage learners while helping them learn content. Join this session and learn to use Google Slides to create an interactive, engaging instructional activity or interactive Choose Your Own Adventure (CYOA) story then guide your students as they create their own. As a result of this session, teachers will: 1. Review storytelling elements; 2. Understand how to create nonlinear Google Slides presentations; and 3. Learn ways to use CYOA slideshows in the classroom. This session is appropriate for teachers at all technology levels.

One of the more popular blended learning models is station rotation. Having groups of students change tasks on a schedule allows you to meet student needs by differentiating instruction. Join us to explore, compare and contrast three tools that can be used to maximize your "computer station" time when using the rotation model. Learn about the features of each tool and understand how to add them to your instructional toolkit. As a result of this session, teachers will: 1. Learn about the station rotation model; 2. Share ideas on ways to differentiate using station rotation; and 3. Plan to use station rotation when delivering instruction. This session is appropriate for teachers at all technology levels.

Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness is a free digital textbook designed for high school American History or AP U.S. History classes. Information is provided through chronological units that include primary and secondary source materials. Short narratives are included in each chapter to present information in a personalized manner and use decision points for students to focus on how information learned fits into a larger narrative. Each unit has a culminating essay activity that assesses the chapter's objectives. This digital textbook also offers tools for text highlighting, online notetaking, and text to speech. To access the textbook, use the link to register and access the materials through the OpenStax platform, reviewed here.
In the Classroom
Take advantage of this free textbook to use for your American History curriculum or supplement your current teaching materials. Pick and choose text, source materials, or assessment information to enhance your curriculum. This text is a perfect addition for schools lacking up-to-date content or for use with distance learning. Use a curation tool such as Padlet, reviewed here, to organize and share materials with students. Use the shelf option to create categories and organize them by videos, articles, primary source documents, etc., to make information easily accessible by your students. Encourage students to share their understanding of the content by creating videos, flyers, graphic images, and more using the tools found at Canva Edu, reviewed here.
