This online exhibit from the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco offers a history of American currency, complete with descriptions, images, and explanations about how the American currency system has evolved. It would be a great supplement to introductory economics or a lesson on, "Why is a dollar worth a dollar?"

To assess student learning have students create concept maps emphasizing what they learned from the interactive tour. This site from CNN offers a look at internal and international issues affecting China, considering everything from the rise of a new middle class to the ecological impact of a new dam to the future of relations with the United States. While there's plenty of history here, the focus is clearly on how China fits into the current world order. Beautiful design and artwork!
In the Classroom
Save this as a favorite and use it as a learning center or station during a unit on modern china. This activity works best if students have a graphic organizer to guide them through all of the information. If in need of help with the guide, we recommend using Graphic Organizer Maker, (reviewed here). This site is a photojournal of a tour through the Chinese countryside, noting the ways in which local "farmers' markets" contribute to the vitality of an otherwise centralized Chinese economy. Interesting for its purely local and village focus, as well as for the photos showing what life in small Chinese villages really looks like.
In the Classroom
Use the images from this site to contribute to a class visual discovery based on the economic situation of China. Most of the images are representative of the free markets thriving in major cities, making it easy to compare and contrast with what students have seen in the US. Select 3-5 of the more stimulating images, placing them in a powerpoint presentation. Show students the slides via interactive whiteboard/projector, with students writing down what they can observe & infer about each image. After the display is complete, have a class discussion based on student findings. Although too outdated to be a current event's piece, this site could be used to study the ever-evolving nature of the Chinese government. Compare the reports on economic and social freedoms to those found elsewhere detailing those same rights today. Over the interactive whiteboard,use an online tool such as the 2 and 3 Circle Interactive Venn Diagrams, reviewed here, to compare and contrast the two environments. While some areas feature information about visiting the actual museum, there is a rich collection of information and multimedia experiences to make World War II history meaningful. Scroll down the page to From the Collection to the Classroom and sign up for a free account. Then, find lesson plans and multimedia resources for the classroom. Click WWII History button at the right to find many pages of information and a timeline. Don't miss many choices under Student Programs.

This site could be the focal point for an extensive unit on World War II, with different student groups investigating aspects of the war. Or feature this site during a single lesson on D-Day. Ask students to decide which technology depicted in the science and technology interactive was the most important factor in the outcome of the war. The Library of Congress has created a mini-portal to a large collection of information pages loaded with demographic, cultural, and statistical information on less well-known nations. Nearly all of the information is intended for older audiences. Nonetheless, this is a really rich resource of high quality (though sometimes dated) information for country reports.
In the Classroom
Use the country profiles as activators or introductory activities to a lesson on a specific current event. Before students are able to understand happenings of today, it can be beneficial to provide them with a greater context, as seen here. This site provides video and written coverage of many Presidential Debates starting in 1960 and moving forward.
In the Classroom
If teaching about the historic 1960 television debates, use the videos and transcripts to provide students with something more tangible than the summary in their textbook. Click on the debate history section of the site, selecting the year 1960. There are multiple transcripts and videos that can easily be printed or viewed on the interactive whiteboard. To show the impact of technology, have students listen to the debate before watching - and also select a winner. After, have students repeat the activity; this time through watching the video. Have a class discussion on how seeing the candidates affected their opinions, and whether a similar effect occurred in 1960. Use the learning page as a launch pad for planning your own lessons in conjunction with the vast array of resources available from the Library of Congress. Many of the documents and images are in the public domain and can therefore be used as visuals in other multimedia projects created by teachers and students. Be sure to read the permissions. Share an image on your projector or interactive whiteboard or a voice recording to start a lesson. Assign students to explore and explain collections you select. Be sure to check out the self-directed professional development modules, as well.
