This makes it a great resource whether you're planning your own celebration or developing a lesson about the holiday. For students with Kwanzaa questions, this would be a great resource.

Are you interested in using concept mapping but don't know where to begin? This site is loaded with activities teachers have created using Kidspiration. For this project, classes read a book and wrote a different ending or sequel as a class. Teachers then created a follow up activity in any content area using Kidspiration. Samples of the projects, tutorials and templates are available. Kidspiration is required to fully view the samples. Get a 30-day trial from the link provided. TeachersFirst is not recommending purchase of this specific program and is not affiliated with Inspiration or Kidspiration.
In the Classroom
Choose a book and template that fits your curriculum. Load Kidspiration on a classroom computer for students to complete when they have time. As always, follow your district's policies on loading software onto district computers. Many of these activities are easily adaptable to Inspiration, the "older" version of the concept-mapping program.For a free online software alternative see Gliffy .

How do we get kids to write and how do we show them how to do it? This site is a big help with some of those questions. It covers: choosing a subject, organizing, revising, editing, documenting sources, informal essays, thesis/support essays, argumentative essays, and exploratory essays. Rolling the cursor over each different subject will show what it includes.
In the Classroom
This site gives activities and suggestions about how to involve kids in what they write. The wide range of grade levels addressed is also attractive, although it is geared more for high school students. Have student use the Explore tab to find links for coming up with new ideas to write about. Don't forget to look at "The Journalists' Questions" in the middle of the page.There is a memberhsip option. If you allow students to join, you should first get parent permission. Members are able to create journals and participate in collaboration, but you should have firm Internet Safety policies in place, if you decide to use these in class.

This is another rich site from a university that enables you to click through to get exactly what you need for writing ideas, skills, and support. THe two main , Writing Processes and Types of Writing, address a wide range of specific writing needs. Clicking on the Teaching Resources tab at the top of the page gives you everything from planning and conducting classes to teaching with technology and writing across the curriculum.
In the Classroom
This is a terrific site that allows as much use or as little as you want: instructions for students, addenda instructions for the teacher, wide-ranging topics, or single skills. It also offers some good refreshers for teachers who have not taught writing in awhile or are looking for new ways to approach it, particularly using technology. In this lesson, students explore various methods authors use to create effective characters. Students consider what makes a character believable and create their own characterizations. They also write a short script using the characters they created and act out the script.
An amazingly adaptable set of lesson plans (roughly 4 lessons of 45-minutes)in which students will:
--gain insight into various methods authors use to build characterization.
--experience the creative process of developing a character.
--broaden understanding of the role of minor characters.
--explore the inferential power of images and literary allusions to enhance characterization.
--understand ways the text mirrors attitudes, values, fashions, manners, and mores of the time period.
--experience growth in the writing process, oral skills, skills of research, contextual analysis, and collaboration. Then, Students will apply methods of characterization with two quick writes.
--gain insight into various methods authors use to build characterization.
--experience the creative process of developing a character.
--broaden understanding of the role of minor characters.
--explore the inferential power of images and literary allusions to enhance characterization.
--understand ways the text mirrors attitudes, values, fashions, manners, and mores of the time period.

This site is a lesson idea for a game that teaches confidence, pantomime, and critical thinking. It's also a lot of fun. It can be adapted for use from Kindergarten to Middle School - obviously with varying levels of sophistication. It looks more complicated than it is - the creator says he never has trouble making his students understand it.
In the Classroom
Small grous of students are assigned a room in the house and then choose to be object within the room group (the other groups are the audience) and in acting out the object, they must also convince the teacher why they are useful (or were invented, etc.). Very cute and teaches all sorts of different skills painlessly. One possible adaptation is to use this as a review for different science concepts, such as body systems, instead of simply for an object. Each group could be a body system and would have to tell why they should not be taken away. This extensive webquest on life in Medieval times includes all facets of life and provides multiple challenges to students to research, assimilate information, write, analyze and evaluate. The final group task (after multiple individual steps) is to analyze a problem from Medieval times and provide a suggested solution. The list of resources to use is extensive, and stduetns are also directed to infrmation about evaluating web-based srouces BEFORE they start the task. Although there is no actual Teacher Page, there is a listing of resources teachers might use and an invitaiton to submit further ideas via email.
In the Classroom
Review the process carefully to see if you need to adapt it in your situation. The teacher who designed this uses clips from a film (Ever After) and specific software packages (Inspiration, Publisher). There are certainly alternate ways to accomplish the same tasks if you do not have access to these exact resources. If you do not have as much time, you may want to use some portion of this webquest with your students. It is well-packaged for use in toto, if you wish!One alternative would be having students turn in work via Google Docs, reviewed here, allowing for easy feedback from the teacher and no messy papers to grade.

This is a great entry way into international culture. The variety of topics and photographs of real students and foreign ports make it interesting to everyone.

This is a fascinating site for students of authors. It contains an excellent timeline of Carroll's life next to a world timeline as well as portraits he took as a photographer and an essay about him. The best part is a page by page printing of his "scrapbook" containing 130 items that can be seen in the original form as well as with a scholarly explanation of each item.

Use with author study or as a resource for a student doing biographical author study. This is also a good base for a lesson on the kinds of things authors keep to inspire their own writing as part of a biographical criticism lesson. By registering with an email address, you and your students are able to create their own newspaper with a choice of three options, a simple page layout, one with frames, or one with two windows which requires Java Script. Creators can also add images and/or links to images and other info. After selecting either "standard" (displays newspaper sections one at a time) or "quick paper" (shows all sections and selects the most popular items for the final paper), students can click to read their personalized news. Options allow students to hear the news also, using RealAudio. They can select news from local, national, or international papers. Instructions on the site are excellent and preparing the personalized newspaper just takes a few moments. Participants receive a link to their newspapers in an email message sent only to them. remember that the audio requires Real Player. Get it from the TeachersFirst Toolbox page.

A great way to get students involved with the news on an intimate basis!! Teachers can also create a classroom newspaper for parents and others to access. Check on your district policy regarding posting student work to the web. It would be a good idea to limit names to initials and to get written parent permission before setting up accounts.
