Dartmouth College's guide to citing sources for academic writing is particularly concise, showing MLA, APA, and several other formats for a wide variety of citations. There is also a good discussion of how and when to cite reference works.

In the Classroom

This is a site that would be useful to review with students before working on a research project or paper. Open the site on the interactive whiteboard or projector, helping the students to process the information. Make sure to include this site on any student worksheets explaining projects and on the class wiki, to highlight the importance of citations. Students who move on to college will be grateful they received this information!

This site was designed specifically for distance learning and writing instruction, but it contains anything an English teacher, or student of English could want. English as a second language resources, lesson plans, and helpful suggestions. Resources, lesson plans, and materials for writers and teachers. Also provides links to other sites for more information. Features online writing lab with one on one tutorials, and a grammar hotline, and hand-outs on. This site also has resources for teaching writing across curriculum for integrated teaching styles. This site is reviewed by Purdue English Department students and updated regularly.

In the Classroom

Use the handouts under the ESL heading as study guides for students trying to remember English conjugations. Have students practice the words with paper or online flashcards. If using an online tool, try Flashcard Stash, reviewed here. Making the cards and repetition will reenforce the message, and help students in a hands-off instructional manner.

This site is a collection of over 20,000 stories written by children all over the planet! This site also offers a pen-pal connection for children around the world that are interested in writing. Stories are not accepted for publication over the summer. An award winning site for young writers. An excellent site!

In the Classroom

This site would be an excellent motivating tool for students participating in writing and literature. Save the site as a learning center or station, and allow students both to peruse the stories and submit their own stories to be published. Stories are separated by genre, making it easier to tailor student's focus during a particular unit. During a poetry unit, instruct students to examine only the poetry and to submit their own. Very useful site to inspire and motivate students through the use of their peer's work!

This is an extensive, easy-to-use grammar guide designed to help students avoid common grammatical mistakes and improve their writing style. It was created by Capital Community Technical College, Hartford, but the content could work well for high school students, and even some middle schoolers. There are plenty of examples, tips, and other resources.

Designed primarily for one-on-one use, there are lots of very usable features, making it a good place for students to look when they're "stuck" on a grammatical issue.

This is an electronic version of William Strunk's book, originally published in 1918. The book is used still to help practice combining composition with the study of literature. It gives principles of English style, rules of usage, and commonly violated principles of compositions. The chapters are outlined, and sections of importance are highlighted. From Columbia University.

In the Classroom

Use this site as a resource at the beginning of a unit focused on the basics of compositions. Have students look over the elementary rules, reviewing all, with the intentions of having a class vote over which three are the most important. This is a great way to highlight all the rules in a way thats quick and less boring for students than would a text reading.

Students strengthen skills in process writing, creative thinking, inductive reasoning, and cooperative work by using detective fiction. After working together to solve a mysterious "murder" among the book stacks in the school library, students are introduced to a collection of children's detective novels representing a wide range of reading levels and cultural settings. While class lessons apply to any and all selections, each student is assigned a book that reflects his/her individual reading level.

In the Classroom

As a class, try to solve this literary mystery which involves a murder among the book shelves in a library. While working on solving who did it, students will learn about a wide variety of intermediate detective novels. Have student pair or small groups of students pick whichever one is of the most interest, and get it either online or make a trip to the school library to find the book. Have the pairs or small groups report out about their book to their peers after completion. Be sure they plan out their presentation by using a storyboard creator such as SuperNotecard, reviewed here. Students can then finalize their presentations using a tool like Make Beliefs Comix, reviewed here, or Powtoon, reviewed here. As a wrap up for this unit you may also want to have students solve the online interactive mystery Murder at the the Met: An American Art Mystery, reviewed here.
