Merlot (Multimedia Educational Resource for Learning and Online Teaching) is a curated collection of free learning and support materials for educators that includes almost 100,000 learning resources in all content areas and grade levels. Search information on the site in several ways, such as using a keyword or searching by ISBN, materials, or members. Use the dropdown box labeled "Browse" at the top of the page to conduct a more focused search by grade level, content, type of material, and mobile platform. All available content includes clickable peer reviews and user ratings with an overview of the material, recommended uses, and target student population. Registration isn't required; however, it allows you to bookmark and save topics. In addition, registration offers access to Merlot's Content Builder (website maker) and a Course ePortfolio.

Bookmark and save Merlot to use for professional development and planning purposes. Create an account to save and access bookmarks at any time throughout the year. Due to the size of this site, consider including it as part of your professional development activities with grade-level or department peers to explore by sections. For example, during one session, examine options of assessment tools, and explore the included collections about your course content at another meeting. In the Classroom
Although this is not a typical "educational" site, the possibilities for classroom use are unlimited. Have students create their perfect day using the site as a story starter or creative writing prompt. Use the site to plan a virtual field trip anywhere. Have students create a day in the life of a story character, famous person from history, or in the career of their choosing. Retell any important date in history using Peek as a guideline. Teach budget planning by having students research and plan a perfect travel day. World language or world cultures classes can use this to create a day focused on the cultural riches of the country they are studying. Language students can write about it in their new language. After students create their perfect day, create an online folder or wiki page with links to all of the "perfect days" for other students to use as writing prompts (creative or informational). Share all students' perfect days on your interactive whiteboard or projector. Use this site to create a perfect day for visitors to your school or community.Edge Features:

Each suggestion offers sites that cater to "real" audiences for young students, often audiences of their own peers. Explore resources that offer feedback and contests as well as more independent sites that accept submissions from student authors. Although quite short, this post is a great starting point for finding publishing resources for your students.
In the Classroom
Bookmark this article and explore the resources suggested for publishing student work. As you plan for ways to challenge your gifted students, this resource can provide ideas to extend their exposure and collaboration experience with other writers. Of course you will want to have parent permission before allowing interactions from your classroom, but parents of gifted students will probably delight in cooperating and even join in monitoring interactions as needed. WordDB is a comprehensive resource for working with words. It offers various tools, such as rhyming words, antonyms, synonyms, crossword answers, and much more. WordDB assists you with clues when playing word games such as Scrabble, crosswords, and Wordle, reviewed here. Scroll through the home page to find many more tools for words, including finding words by length, trending words, and the latest clues from the New York Times Crossword Puzzle.

Bookmark and keep this site handy for many classroom uses. Include a link to WordDB on your class website and classroom computers for students to access at school and home. Encourage students to use the tools on WordDB to improve their writing projects by finding antonyms, synonyms, and words of different lengths to include. Share the daily popular words as vocabulary activities using the Frayer Model as a graphic organizer to provide and apply knowledge of the words. Use the Frayer Model template provided on Figjam, reviewed here to discuss vocabulary, then use Figjam's tools to write sentences and short stories together as a class using your new vocabulary words. You can access CapCut online, download it for desktop use, or use the mobile app to edit videos. The platform also supports team collaboration and provides resources for enhancing video content with music, texts, and effects.
In the Classroom
Have students create short biography videos of historical figures, integrating photos, text, and voiceovers using CapCut. They can document their science experiments through video, using CapCut to add captions explaining each step. This method engages students and enhances comprehension of scientific concepts. The Student Writing portal of One World Education shares exemplary writing examples from One World Student Ambassadors. Each piece models grade-level writing and includes a reflection experience. Based on the One World Program, articles feature information based on student research of a social justice issue important to them. In addition to the featured student writing, the site also includes a research portal for students categorized by grade levels and issues. Sign up to become a partner and access curriculum materials based on Common Core Standards.
In the Classroom
Share the student writing samples with your class to model grade-level writing and research skills. On your interactive writing board upload an example and use highlighting and drawing tools to point out examples of good writing including use of specific examples, text structure, and vocabulary. Ask students to share their first draft on a site like Peergrade, reviewed here. This site allows teachers to create an assignment with a rubric and automatically distributes uploaded assignments to peers for review. As a follow-up, after students complete their writing project, ask them to create podcasts sharing additional information and reflections on the social justice issue they researched. Buzzsprout, reviewed here, is an excellent tool for creating and sharing podcasts.

In the Classroom
Before asking students to use Strip Background, demonstrate how to create and save images. Consider recording a tutorial using Free Screen Recorder Online, reviewed here, then sharing a link on student and classroom devices. Discussing copyright and fair use best practices is always an excellent idea when editing images. Use Strip Background to enhance students' presentations and stories. For example, remove the background from a student's picture and then add a background with them in a location or setting that is part of their project. Choose a background image of a city being studied, a different time, or a far-away setting like the moon, then place your student image on top. Resize the image to fit the scene. Include this image as a starter for class projects. Use images on top of book covers for book talks, create images for story characters and heroes, or use them for weather reports. The ideas for using this tool are only limited by your imagination and that of your students. It provides helpful resources and standards-based activities to teach students how to avoid plagiarizing information. Included resources are videos, games, and learning modules. In addition, there are several sources for creating citations. The extension activities share ideas for teaching the basics of citing resources to students as young as kindergarten.

Take advantage of the suggestions provided in this article to discuss plagiarism and proper information citations at every opportunity. Use Padlet, reviewed here, to share resources with students to find and use easily. For example, create a row on your Padlet with links to citation generators, another row with videos that discuss plagiarism, and another row with links to games and practice activities. Students need to understand copyright laws and responsible content creation as they engage in various academic projects and creative endeavors. This workshop will equip you with the essential knowledge and strategies you need to effectively teach copyright concepts to your students. Together, we'll explore the legal and ethical implications of using other people's work and the creative and educational benefits of remixing and reusing content.
