Within the classroom resources are plenty of lesson plans that are aligned to National standards. Tap into a treasure chest of ideas, lesson plans, and activities for the language arts classroom. This site offers a great selection of topics from basic grammar and spelling, to reading and comprehension skills. Activities are interactive and would work especially well in a computer room where students can progress at their own speed. Full lesson plans and worksheets (with answers) in PDF format are available for downloading. Requires Adobe Acrobat.
In the Classroom
Beyond the excellent lesson plans, this site offers "interactive flashcards" that can help students review for quizzes and tests. Save this site on a classroom computer, and use it as a learning site during downtime. Allow students to pick their degree of difficulty, and they can review endlessly on a number of subjects.

Though this page has been archived, and it is no longer updated, the links for the poems are still working. Poetry is a tough nut for the best of teachers. This British site offers engaging, highly visual presentations of poetry that will draw even the most poem-phobic students into the presentation. There are many options from which to choose, and the variety of presentation styles will help ensure that there is something for everyone. Language arts teachers will find this one well worth the effort. The audio requires Real Player, and a few activities require Shockwave.
In the Classroom
Use this site on the interactive whiteboard or projector as an introductory activity to poetry. Play one or more of the clips on the interactive whiteboard as a way to hook student interest. You get what you asked for, but something else frequently comes along too. Careful searching can reduce this behavior somewhat. Use this one when you're after something really obscure; other resources will probably do a better job with routine requests.

This one could be an interesting bridge between a writing assignment and the study of World War II.
In the Classroom
Use this article (includes a video) as a learning center or station during a unit on WWII in a history class or during a study of her book in an English class. This would be a great way to introduce Anne Frank, the exhibit serving to put all students at the same level of understanding of her life. This site provides a unique opportunities for students and teachers listen to the original audio files of some of the most pivotal American political speeches, as well as read the transcripts of many others. Either as a supplement to American History and Social Studies curriculum, or as a lesson in the role of political rhetoric in American Government, this site has a wonderful collection of primary resources.
In the Classroom
What's unique about this site is that they have the audio to accompany the transcripts of major scripts in US history. When teaching about crucial figures such as Martin Luther King Jr., FDR or JFK use the audio to physically show students what was so monumental about their speeches. Use this site on the Interactive whiteboard or projector, just make sure your sound system is working. In the Classroom
Beyond the obvious application for comparing treatment of news events around the country and the world, this site could also be used for writing, world language practice, a look at editorial choices, or other social studies applications. Include this resource in a media literacy unit on bias or during Newspapers in Education month. With elementary students, share many newspapers on a projector or interactive whiteboard as students identify the various elements of a newspaper article. The Lesson Plan link above contains and excellent poster link for familiarizing students with the elements that comprise the front page of a newspaper. Download it along with the lesson plan. The poster utilizes a sample front page from The Washington Post to illustrate how a front page is formatted. Have students analyze the sample front page by answering the suggested questions. Once students are familiar with the elements of a newspaper, extend their learning and challenge them to create their own class or school newspaper using Printing Press, reviewed here. If articles are too long for some readers, or if you are teaching summarizing skills consider using Skim.it, reviewed here, a Chrome extension that reduces articles into a 100-word summary.
